UNIVERSITY FELDENKRAIS SCHOLARSHIP -
The Nancy Parker Feldenkrais® Scholarship Fund
On the occasion of her 80th birthday, Nancy Parker's children set up a Scholarship fund at the University of Ottawa, honouring her and her devotion to the Feldenkrais Method. This fund will offer a $2,000 scholarship to a deserving student to explore Feldenkrais. At this time there is over $10,000 in the fund, and the goal is to double that. The amazing thing is that the Ontario Government will match all contributions! At $40,000.00 (including the Government's share) the scholarship will continue in perpetuity.
For those of you who do not know her, I would like to introduce my good friend and colleague - Nancy Parker. Nancy emigrated to Canada from England in l971 with her three children and worked as a PT at The Ottawa General Hospital. She graduated from Amherst in l983 and, as a result of her fine work, shortly after that the Hospital set up a full time Feldenkrais clinic. This clinic is not funded in any way and clients have to pay as they would in a private clinic. Although Nancy has since retired, the clinic continues with Marianne Rivington at the helm. If it is not the only Feldenkrais hospital clinic in the world, it certainly is the longest running and perhaps the first at a publicly financed Health Institution. And perhaps, this scholarship for an alternative method is the first to be Government supported.
However, Nancy doesn't know the meaning of 'retired'. Nancy turned 82 in January, but she doesn't know that either, and continues to sally forth with the energy of a person half her age. She rides her bike to the market, tends a beautiful garden, leads an active social life, enjoys exotic travels, takes her grandsons on hot air balloon rides, still attends advanced trainings and, as if this was not enough, maintains a full practice which has included a former Prime Minister of Canada. Nancy sees 15 clients a week - with a constant waiting list. Truly a remarkable woman!
